AGENCY SPOTLIGHT

This column features a different agency each month. If you wish to feature your agency in an upcoming issue, please contact Lori Jacobsen at 488-3857.

Fresno Council on Child Abuse Prevention

FCCAP is a nonprofit, community based organization dedicated to promoting community efforts that directly affect child abuse prevention, intervention, education, and treatment by serving as a facilitator for programs that are related to child abuse and neglect. The agency initiates and promotes educational programs about child abuse prevention, serves as an advocate for children and parents, as well as serving to encourage community awareness through training and educational forums.

Over the years, FCCAP has added programs that directly impact the well being of children in our community. We offer mandated reporter training, information and referral services, public education about child abuse and neglect, and print an annual update of the "Resources in Fresno County" poster which we distribute throughout Fresno County. For further information, please call (559) 268-1118 or write to FCCAP, 924 N. Van Ness Avenue.

Additionally, FCCAP provides the site for the Multidisciplinary Forensic Interview Center. The MDIC goals include the minimization of trauma to abused children by reducing the number of interviews and interviewers, enhancing the fact-finding process in criminal and dependency cases, and thereby increasing the probability of convicting the perpetrators of abuse. MDIC has a solid working relationship with law enforcement, the district attorney's office, Child Protective Services, the Fresno County Victim Witness Assistance Center, and the UMC Children's Clinic Emergency Room.

Each year, in April, FCCAP holds an Annual Luncheon for Child Abuse Prevention Month. At that time, FCCAP has an opportunity to thank local individuals who have provided outstanding contributions to child safety and child abuse prevention. We also use this luncheon to once again bring to the attention of the public, the need to continue providing services that keep our children safe.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION IS EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS.

BOOKS AT THE LIBRARY

The Verbally Abusive Man - Can He Change?: A Woman's Guide to Deciding Whether to Stay or Go (Avon, MA : Adams Media, 2006) by Patricia Evans, price $14.95.

DESCRIPTION: The author goes beyond identifying verbally abusive behaviors to prescribing a course of action for both victim and abuser. She provides tools to transform the relationship and lets the reader know it is possible to change. She also explains how to gauge whether the change is real or an illusion. She helps the reader to decide whether it's time to leave the relationship and what do to when it is.

CALL NUMBER: 362.8292/EVA

LOCATION: Central, Firebaugh, Reedley, Senior Resource Center.

Family Wanted: Stories of Adoption (New York : Random House, 2005) edited by Sara Holloway, price $14.95.

DESCRIPTION: This anthology shows that families, biological and adoptive, are complicated. The 24 essays are written by established authors who have been involved in some way with adoption and divided in sections on being an adopted child, giving your child up for adoption and becoming an adoptive parent. While all of the pieces celebrate love and caring, they are also imbued with a profound sense of grief and loss.

CALL NUMBER: 362.734/FAM

LOCATION: Central, Senior Resource Center.

Last Rights: Rescuing the End of Life from the Medical System (New York : St. Martin's Press, 2006) by Stephen P. Kiernan, price $25.95.

DESCRIPTION: This book looks at the experience many people have as they helplessly stand by as physicians insist that a battery of tests and interventions can prolong the life of a loved one, only to see those expensive efforts fail. The author maintains that American medical schools devote more time to teaching students about diseases not even found in the U.S. than to preparing them to work with terminal patients. Doctors, therefore, are ill equipped in every way to accompany a patient down the path to a serene death. The book is part guide to the policy questions surrounding death and part an informal handbook for helping with the deaths of you own loved ones.

CALL NUMBER: 179.7/KIE

LOCATION: Central, Cedar-Clinton, Senior Resource Center, Woodward Park.
