If the thought of donating blood seems a little daunting, you are just the person we hope will read this. The saying goes, "knowledge is power," so we would like to empower you with a great deal of information about the life-saving gift that is blood donation.
After more than 50 years of operation, the work of the Central California Blood Center comes down to two things: the great need and the great people (donors) who can help meet that need. Every day, concerned residents from around the Central Valley heed the call to give blood, whether at neighborhood donor centers or one of the hundreds of mobile drives taking place monthly. The donors and the Central California Blood Center form the vital partnership that supplies the Valley's 31 hospitals with life-saving blood every day. To accomplish this 6,000 to 8,000 people, every month, must be willing to roll-up their sleeves and give. Pretty impressive, isn't it?
Now, if you are wondering, who exactly will benefit from this huge, on-going effort, here is a perfect example. In July 2002, doctors diagnosed Parker Fritsch, the son of Richard and Melissa Fritsch of Clovis, with Philadelphia Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The seven year old has needed many blood transfusions and just last year underwent a lifesaving marrow transplant. Parker is now doing well, but he was not alone in his battle for good health. There are hundreds of children and adults, today, who would not survive without a blood donor taking the time to give. The best doctors and medicine can't work unless there is blood, if needed, to sustain life.
Who can donate? Potential donors must be in good general health, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be at least 17 years of age. Senior citizens are encouraged to give, as there is no upper age limit. Donating blood is really very easy and actually takes less than one hour. To make your donation smooth, please eat a good meal and drink plenty of water within 4 hours prior to donating. And, donors can give blood every eight weeks. A Social Security Number and a photo ID are required at registration.
What happens to the blood after donation? Each pint of blood is tested for communicable diseases and viruses, such as West Nile, Hepatitis and HIV, as mandated by the Federal Drug Administration to assure it is safe. Blood Center staff then delivers this lifesaving gift to all Valley hospitals as needed, 24/7.
To learn more about donating blood or marrow registry, please call 1-800-404-2566 (BLOOD) or log on to the Central California Blood Center's website, at www.cencalblood.org.
