AGENCY SPOTLIGHT

(This column features agencies or programs that are offered in Fresno County to assist people in meeting challenges they face. If you wish to have your agency and/or program featured in this column, please contact Lori Jacobsen at 488-3857.)

Fresno County Women's Chamber of Commerce

The Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce was originally established as an all male organization. Women in business served on some committees, but were not allowed to hold office and did not have voting privileges. Because women were paid lower salaries in those days most women could not afford to join the Greater Chamber.

In 1950 Martha McKinley received permission from the president of the Chamber to form a "Women's Section" with dues more reasonable to the working women of that time. They were to have their own officers and bylaws. For the next 40 years the Women's Section acted as a support group for the Chamber. Its members served as ambassadors, hostesses and organizers of social events. In 1990 it was time for a change and thus evolved the Fresno County Women's Chamber of Commerce.

Their mission is to provide and promote professional opportunities, personal development, financial growth, community leadership, and legislative awareness for women. They have a very diverse membership and are proud of our involvement in the community. FCWCC represents and sponsors the following:

Our members meet the 4th Tuesday of every month. We encourage you to visit our website at www.fcwcc.org to learn more about upcoming events and speakers. It is a great opportunity to network. We invite you to be our guest and see what being a member of FCWCC can do for you.
