AGENCY SPOTLIGHT

(This column features agencies or programs that are offered in Fresno County to assist people in meeting challenges they face. If you wish to have your agency and/or program featured in this column, please contact Lori Jacobsen at 488-3857.)

Community Link, Inc.

Community Link is the oldest gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) service organization in the Central Valley. Founded in February 1988, the organization has been a constant source of support and resources.

Community Link views one of its main purposes as being educational, helping to develop a better understanding of GLBT issues. Building bridges of understanding and cooperation goes a long way towards improving the lives of all Central Valley residents.

The Speaking Out speaker's bureau provides speaking panels that can address a wide array of topics that focus or touch on the GLBT community. Speaking Out has provided trained professional speakers for the Department of Justice on hate crimes, conducted sensitivity trainings for local police departments, and assisted in training crisis telephone hotline crisis workers to better serve GLBT individuals. The speakers have also made several presentations at local college and high school campuses.

Since Community Link's formation 18 years ago, they have been dedicated to providing services to the GLBT youth 25 years of age and younger, through the Fresno Youth Alliance. Social support is provided through weekly youth group meetings.

On the other side of the Youth Alliance is the Gray Alliance, a social support group for older members of the GLBT community. This group meets monthly for Sunday potlucks and evening dinners out at local eateries. The group also engages in other activities and attends cultural, arts, and entertainment events as a group.

Community Link has just published their 129th issue of the News Link, the GLBT newspaper serving the Central Valley. From Stockton to Bakersfield, the News Link keeps the GLBT community abreast of current news that affects and effects their lives.

Additionally, Community Link publishes a business and resource directory, The Pink Pages, providing the GLBT community with information on organizations and agencies that serve the GLBT community. It also provides information on support groups, recovery services, HIV services, social groups, political clubs, and supportive businesses.

Fresno Rainbow Pride organizes their annual GLBT Pride Parade and Festival. This has grown into a regional event, drawing people from all over the Valley to celebrate the contributions of the GLBT community and have a day of their own. This year's event is expected to be the largest one-day GLBT event in the valley.

Community Link and all of the individuals that have made it possible to offer these and other services to the GLBT community for the past 18 years are proud of what they have been able to accomplish. All of this has been done with an all-volunteer staff. They have no paid employees and services are funded by donations and community fund-raisers. They receive no public or governmental funding.

For more information about Community Link and all of their programs check out their web site: www.communitylinkfresno.com or call their out going info line 266-LINK (5465).
