It is now illegal to dispose of household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermostats, and electronic devices such as televisions, computers, printers, VCRs, etc. in your household garbage. To properly dispose of these items they will have to be taken to a household hazardous waste facility, a universal waste handler or an authorized recycling center.
The Department of Public Works and Planning has a listing of businesses in Fresno County that accept rechargeable batteries (phones, cameras, watches, shavers, power tools, etc.) and automobile batteries. You can find this list of recycling sites at http://www.co.fresno.ca.us/4510/4360/misc/2005RecyclingDirectory.pdf. Or you can phone 262-4259 for a copy of this directory.
The County of Fresno also offers Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Events that will accept batteries along with other household hazardous waste. You can phone 262-4259 to learn when and where the next HHW Drop-Off Event will be held.
California State University, Fresno has taken up the call and is offering recycling of computers, televisions and other electronic devices. Batteries are not taken by this recycling program. Devices that can be recycled for free include televisions and computer monitors. Other devices that can be recycled at a fee of $.25 per pound include personal computers and components (mice, keyboards, etc.), PDAs, cell phones, printers, faxes, and stereo/video equipment.
This program will be offered once a month and information can be found at http://ehs.csufresno.edu/CSUF_Collector.asp about dates, times and costs. You can find the list of what can and can not be recycled on this web page also.
