VOLUNTEER FACILITATORS NEEDED

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, April 1 - Saturday, April 30; 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Senior Center Without Walls, 114 Montecito Avenue, Oakland, CA 94610.

DESCRIPTION: Senior Center Without Walls is currently recruiting capable volunteers to facilitate some of the telephone groups in The Summer 2011 session which will run from May 30, 2011 - August 21, 2011. With the increase in the number of participants they are especially in need of additional qualified facilitators for their supportive groups, covering such subjects as anxiety, depression, coping with loss, etc. These groups are not meant to be therapy, but rather to offer support in a safe, nurturing setting. Most groups run for 45 minutes once a week for 12 weeks, at a time convenient to the facilitator. All calls are toll free and can be made from office, home or anywhere else.

FREE GROUP THERAPY & ANGER MANAGEMENT

SERVING UNDER-RESOURCED COLLEGE STUDENTS

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Fresno City College, 1101 E. University Avenue, Old Administration Building, Room 251, Fresno.

DESCRIPTION: This one day workshop will address the needs of the under-resourced college student and provide a wealth of resources for post-secondary education. Participants will learn to use teaching strategies to build cognitive ability, create developmental models in their discipline to move students from concrete learning to the abstract thinking and planning required in college, improve retention by building relationships of mutual trust and respect, and work with under-resourced students to tap their knowledge and improve institutional policy and procedures. The guest speaker at this conference will be Bethanie Tucker. This event is hosted by Fresno City College.

ASIANFEST 2011

DESCRIPTION: AsianFest is an open air community festival that showcases and celebrates diverse Asian American community with cultural demonstrations, martial arts performances, and traditional dance performances. Learn about elements of Asian culture in Japanese, Chinese, Laotian, Cambodian, Punjabi, and Hmong villages and sample delicious Asian cuisine while you are strolling through the unique vendor fair. Family activities include origami and other cultural crafts and an early literacy program where children can participate in cultural and literacy enriched activities. This festival is presented by the Fresno City College Asian Month committee.

FRESNO RELAY FOR LIFE

DESCRIPTION: Relay for Life is a fun overnight event where participants can help fight cancer by raising money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society's mission. You can participate as an individual or as a member of a team. Celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember the loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against the disease that has taken too many lives already.

COST: Each participant is asked to raise a minimum of $100.

SAROYAN TOWN WALK

DESCRIPTION: This walk takes visitors through historic downtown Fresno highlighting the landmarks and experiences of the William Saroyan's youth. It will celebrate the heritage of the Armenian/American culture in this region. The tour includes the lobby of the Saroyan Theater and the sanctuary of the Holy Trinity Apostolic Church. This walk is sponsored by the William Saroyan Society.

FRESNO EARTH DAY 2011

DESCRIPTION: Fresno Earth Day is a local initiative of Earth Day that celebrates global environmentalism. This year the theme will be A Billion Acts of Green - the largest environmental service campaign in the world - to inspire and reward simple individual acts, and larger organizational initiatives that further the goal of measurably reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability. Planned activities include solar cooking demonstrations, a green car show, bio-fuel making demonstrations, a live bee hive, walking tours, and more. This event is presented by the Fresno Earth Day 2011 Coalition.

FOOD NOT BOMBS LUNCH FOR THE HUNGRY

SELF-GUIDED JAPANESE HISTORICAL & CULTURAL TOUR

DESCRIPTION: This self-guided tour of local Japanese historical and cultural sites is being presented by the Central California District Council of the Japanese American Citizens League in conjunction with the Sisters of Manzanar Opera that is being presented the following day at Frank's Place at the Warnor's Center for the Performing Arts. SISTERS OF MANZANAR OPERA

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, May 1; 1:30.m. - 4 p.m.; Frank's Place at the Warnor's Center for Performing Arts, 1432 Fulton Street, Fresno.

DESCRIPTION: The Central California District Council of the Japanese American Citizens League (CCDC-JACL) is pleased to announce the West Coast Premiere of the one-act opera, The Sisters of Manzanar. The benefit performance will also feature a keynote discussion with actor George Takei and participation from the opera's composer, Paul Stuart, followed by a VIP Reception with the artists and celebrities. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Fresno Assembly Center Memorial to honor the sacrifices of the Central Valley Japanese Americans who were interned at the Fresno County Fairgrounds during World War II.

CITIZENS' POLICE ACADEMY

DESCRIPTION: Experience a hands-on look at how your police department works. Classroom discussions include patrol, domestic violence, SWAT, homicide, gangs, and many others topics. Tour the dispatch and CSI centers, test your skills on the police department simulators, visit the K9 and Skywatch facilities, and tour the Fresno County Jail. Shoot the weapons that officers carry at the new state of the art Training Facility.
